Border Regions
About the Border Region Project
Electronic data exchange of healthcare data between healthcare providers is essential to ensure high-quality patient care across borders. The Border Region Project, coordinated by Nictiz, promotes collaboration between healthcare organisations on both sides of the border with Germany and Belgium to make electronic data exchange a reality in cross-border patient care. The following is a list of the collaboration initiatives The Border Region Project is (or has been) involved in. We share the experiences, knowledge and insights gained through the Border Region Project to give other healthcare organisations the tools to start exchanging data across borders as well.
Collaboration between Maastricht - Aachen (medical images)
Maastricht UMC+ and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen in Germany are actively working together to facilitate liver transplants for Dutch patients. Patients treated at Maastricht UMC+ can receive a liver transplant at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen, while preliminary tests and follow-up are done at Maastricht UMC+.
Collaboration between Enschede - Kreis Borken
Medisch Spectrum Twente, Kreis Borken, Acute Zorg Euregio, Ambulance Oost, Ambulancezorg Nederland and Nictiz are working together to improve patient care through electronic data exchange in cross-border patient care.
Collaboration between Nijmegen - Kleve
A German resident of the Kleve region suffers a stroke and is taken to one of the clinics of the Katholisches Karl-Leisner-Gesellschaft. Some patients need highly specialised treatment, but the nearest location for this is Radboud UMC. Since time is of the essence for this treatment, neurologists at the Kleve clinics and at Radboud UMC have been working together in this area since 2016.
Collaboration between Maastricht - Aachen (lab results)
Maastricht UMC+ and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen are working on expanding their existing collaboration in the area of image exchange by looking for ways to exchange other medical data for the multidisciplinary meetings for liver transplants, in particular laboratory results.
