A German resident of the Kleve region suffers a stroke and is taken to one of the clinics of the Katholisches Karl-Leisner-Gesellschaft. Some patients need highly specialised treatment, but the nearest location for this is Radboud UMC. Since time is of the essence for this treatment, neurologists at the Kleve clinics and at Radboud UMC have been working together in this area since 2016.

Each situation is discussed in a joint meeting to determine whether the patient meets the criteria for the specialised treatment. If so, the patient is rushed to Radboud UMC in Nijmegen. The medical images that were made in Kleve are extremely important for both the discussion and the treatment of the patient.

In 2019, Radboud UMC developed a portal for sending electronic X-ray images (and other medical information) from the Kleve clinics to Radboud UMC. However, evaluation revealed that this portal is hardly ever used, so patients are still having to bring their own physical records and sometimes records are missing when patients are transferred.

The collaborating parties are very interested in the possibility of sending images to each other via the Twiin portal and the Westdeutsche Teleradiologie Verbund (see Maastricht UMC+ and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen image exchange). But how to make sure that this solution will actually be used? That is a subject of investigation for Radboud UMC and the KKLE clinics, who are currently working on this with Nictiz.
